Moringa tea is harvested from the moringa leaves of the moringa tree. Native to India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, virtually every part of the tree is used in medicine, including the leaves, bark, flowers and seeds. Moringa tea is made from the dried leaves of the tea and can either be packaged into teabags, whizzed with cold water and ice to create iced tea or brewed with hot water to make a delicious refreshing hot drink that’s a brilliant alternative to regular tea or coffee. It’s caffeine-free, too, so it’s the perfect way to start your day.
Used as a medicine in India for over 4,000 years, moringa tea has been used to treat virtually every ailment, from depression to headaches, arthritis to high cholesterol and even weight gain and cancer. A great number of studies have been conducted into the efficacy of moringa tea – with some surprising results.
In 1994, a study was published by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute – showing that drinking moringa tea reduced the instances of oesophageal cancer by up to 60%. Another study backing up moringa tea’s cancer-fighting powers by the University of Purdue found that moringa tea can potentially inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Research has also found that moringa tea can reduce the levels of “bad” cholesterol within the blood whilst simultaneously boosting the levels of “good” cholesterol.
Moringa tea is rich in polyphenols – one of the most important polyphenols is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is one of the most powerful antioxidants there is and is known to prevent a range of diseases, including clotting disorders and high cholesterol whilst fighting cancerous cells without harming healthy cells.
Research by the University of Kansas found that EGCG is up to twice as powerful as reservatrol, another polyphenol. After close study of a group of French participants, when rates of heart disease were found to be far fewer than in the American population, despite a diet rich in fat. Reservatrol, a polyphenol found in red wine, was found to be the reason why – it is thought to reduce and limit the effects of smoking and a diet rich in fat. This may well be why instances of heart disease are relatively low amongst the Japanese population, despite the fact that up to 75% of them are smokers.
Research by the University of Geneva has even found that drinking moringa tea could boost weight loss efforts in those looking to shed a pound or two. A group of male participants were given moringa tea, caffeine, a mixture of the two or a placebo – and those who were given either the moringa tea or the moringa tea and the caffeine tea burned more fat than those who took either the caffeine tea or the placebo.
It also as anti-bacterial properties and not only can it banish bacteria from your body, it can also help to fight against tooth decay.
Using Moringa Tea
There are no known contra-indictions to drinking moringa tea. Enjoy a cup or two a day, either hot or cold, made with the flavourings of your choice. You can also just drink it exactly as its made, without any additional flavourings, whiz it into smoothies, sprinkle it onto cereal or use it to thicken soups, sauces and gravies.
If you experience any side effects whilst drinking moringa tea, cease use immediately and seek medical attention.
